Learning about Leptospirosis
You may have heard on the news that 20 pet dogs in the Detroit area have come down with a bacterial disease called Leptospirosis. This disease is typically spread through your dog coming in contact with rat/mouse/squirrel urine. It can be transmitted to humans and people can get it from urine touching their skin. Cases happen every year, however, this year's version seems to be unusually nasty.
This is nothing to panic about, but it IS a good idea to protect your dogs with the vaccine (which covers 4 strains), keep your dogs from drinking water in the backyard and minimize contact with wildlife.
A vaccine is available for Leptospirosis and we carry it at Cherry Hill. It is a two-vaccine series (an initial vaccine and then a second vaccine 2-4 weeks later) that is available to dogs over 12 weeks of age. Please call if you would like to schedule a vaccine appointment or if you have additional questions.
